The Living Goddess Kumari is a very special girl in Nepal. But have you ever wondered how she’s chosen? The selection process is very strict and only 1 out of 100 girls meet the 32 criteria. The girls must be between 3-5 years old and come from the Newar community. They must also have a calm temperament, a ‘perfect’ body, and no scars or marks. Every year, around 20 girls are shortlisted, but only 1 is chosen to be the new Kumari . The selection process is done by the head priest of the Kumari House, who looks for signs of perfection and purity in the young girls. It’s a unique and special honor to be chosen as the Living goddess Kumari.
