Arogya Sandhan Charitable Trust (ASCT) was founded in 2007 by Mr. Niranjan Biswas, following a powerful movement sparked by societal discrimination against mentally challenged children. After inaugurating the Arogya Sandhan Pathological Laboratory & Doctors’ Clinic in Kolkata, Mr. Biswas was deeply moved by the traumatic experiences of two parents who were evicted from their homes in Guwahati for having mentally challenged children—branded as a “curse of God.” This led him to organize a public awareness seminar titled “Problems of Challenged Children and Role of the Society” at Cotton College, Guwahati on 4th December 2005.
Motivated by the parents’ pleas, Mr. Biswas helped secure land for PASS (Parents Association of Special Students) from the Assam Government, creating a model of community support that inspired the establishment of ASCT.
Since then, ASCT has been operating a Dream Home at Arapanch Mission Gate, Sonarpur (South 24 Parganas, West Bengal) for lifelong care of mentally challenged individuals—many of whom are abandoned or orphaned. Rejecting government funding to maintain independence and dignity, ASCT has prioritized self-sustainability.
To support this vision, ASCT launched the Vocational Training Centre – Arogya Sandhan Perfume Academy, offering livelihood skills to the differently-abled. The Trust has also been exploring skill-based initiatives like the best online soap making classes, empowering caregivers and beneficiaries alike with training in artisanal crafts that foster both creativity and income generation. These efforts ensure that beneficiaries not only receive care but also dignity, purpose, and a future filled with opportunity.
